MawisPhoto – 3D documentation of the Radeton training polygon using a mobile phone

Case study: the use of MawisPhoto by RADETON

About the client: Radeton is primarily a supplier of solutions, technologies and instruments for cable routing, piping and for combating water and gas leaks. They have a purely individual approach to the customer – they strive to find the right solution for them, select the right instrument and provide support and care in their work. This is especially the case in the form of training and education, because the full potential of an instrument can only be developed in the hands of an experienced and trained worker.

About Polygon Radeton: Experience has been gathered over many years and it is in line with this philosophy that the idea to build Polygon – a training centre where customers can encounter more than 200 different faults on all types of utilities – was born. In one place they can experience real situations that they will encounter in the field either only rarely or over a very long period of time. The other dimension of Polygon is then in accelerating the generational transfer of experience when older, more experienced workers retire and the younger generation either does not have enough experience to replace them or is not interested in the field. This is another of Polygon’s importance: to attract the younger generation, to introduce modern technologies in utility routing and to generate interest in the field. This is one of the reasons why Radeton has established cooperation with several high schools and universities. The importance of Polygon is mainly educational, to get as much information and experience as possible in a relatively short time from real situations of failures on all types of utilities.

Problem: Radeton recognized that having sufficiently detailed documentation of the test polygon was essential to effectively train and prepare personnel for various field situations. Traditional documentation methods, such as photographs and paper records, were not accurate enough and were costly. The company was looking for a modern and automated solution that would make it easy to take documentation and create 3D models from these records.

Solution: Radeton decided to implement MawisPhoto into its operations. This mobile app offers a revolutionary approach to documenting buildings and utilities through 3D models created from videos taken with mobile phones. In this way, workers can easily upload photos and videos directly into the app and then use these recordings to create an accurate 3D model.

After the experience of using MawisPhoto for the first time, Radeton found that the system provided several key benefits:

Fast and accurate documentation: the mobile app allows workers to instantly capture images and videos of the terrain, enabling fast and accurate documentation of the current situation on the test polygon.

3D models for better analysis: the 3D models created provide detailed and measurable information about the polygon structure and engineering networks. This allows better analysis and planning of further training scenarios.

Increased efficiency: the automated documentation process reduces administrative burden and time. Workers can focus more on training and improving their skills.

Better training for workers: with accurate documentation and 3D models, workers have access to realistic and up-to-date polygon data, enhancing their ability and skills to detect and solve problems in the field.

Results: after implementing MawisPhoto, Radeton has seen improvements in its operational processes. The training scenarios became more realistic and more relevant to real situations, which led to an increase in the level of training and better preparation of staff. Thanks to 3D models, they can better plan and anticipate potential risk situations.

Overall, MawisPhoto has provided Radeton with a modern and efficient tool for documenting the test polygon and improving training activities. This has enabled it to provide better training and increase the level of safety and reliability of utilities, contributing to overall industry improvement and environmental protection.
